Biography

Lajos Werkner started his fencing career at MEAFC in 1905 before switching to the Nemzeti Vívó Club the following year. He competed five times for the Hungarian national sabre team, and represented them at the 1908 London and 1912 Olympics, winning a team gold both times. His best result in the individual sabre was sixth place at the London Olympics.

In 1914, Werkner was involved in the formation of the Hungarian Fencing Association, and later became one of its leaders. His sporting career was interrupted by the outbreak of World War I. As a mechanical engineer, he was part of the management team of a local factory and also served on the National Federation of Industrialists. Lajos Werkner died at the age of 60 in a car accident in 1943.
