Biography

Eouard Majolier was the son of a London corn broker who was a descendant from the Huguenots. Majolier was educated at Eton, where he was the senior fencing champion in 1906. He went on to Christ Church, Oxford and, in 1908, the year his father died, he rowed for his College eight that beat his old school Eton in the final of the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley. Two years later, in 1910, Majolier won his Blue.

After leaving Oxford, Majolier joined the family corn broking business as a clerk until being commissioned as a lieutenant into the 5th Royal Yorkshire Regiment during World War I. He fought in the Battle of St-Julien during the second Battle of Ypres in 1915 and was awarded the Silver War Badge in 1917. Exhausted, he was sent home to recuperate but died at his London home in 1918 from pneumonia contracted whilst serving on the Western Front. At the time of his death, Majolier left a wife, Geraldine, and two daughters who were both under the age of two, with the youngest being born just four months before he died.
