Biography

London fruiterer Joe Cohen was a leading ABA judge and referee for more than 25 years. He also served on committees of the Association and was in demand as a Master of Ceremonies (MC). Towards the end of the 19th century, and in the first quarter of the 20th century, he was regarded as one of the best officials in the sport and, whilst he did officiate in the occasional professional bout, he remained loyal to the amateur game. He refereed regularly at the ABA Championships and at the 1908 Olympics he acted as a judge in three contests, two of them being final bouts. He was a judge for the heavyweight final when Albert Oldman knocked out Sid Evans in the first round, and also in the middleweight final between John Douglas and Snowy Baker.
