Biography

Aside from his brief career as a player, Montenegro’s Petar Porobić will best be remembered for being a world champion water polo coach. Porobić played for VK Primorac and Yugoslavia’s national youth team before turning to coaching in 1982. He coached for multiple domestic teams, including VK Primorac, VK Bečej, and Jadran. From 1997 to 2008 he helped to lead Jadran to three championship titles, two cup wins, and a place in the final of the LEN Champions League.

Porobić became the head coach of the Serbia and Montenegro team, leading them to gold at the 2005 World Championships. In 2008 the team of Montenegro won the European Championships in Málaga, beating Serbia 6–5 in the final. During the same year Montenegro just missed out on a medal at the Beijing Olympics when they finished in fourth place. Porobić returned to the Olympics for the 2020 Games in Tokyo, this time as the head coach of the Chinese women’s team where they finished in eighth place.
