Biography

Bengt Ljungquist competed at the Olympics in two sports, in the unusual combination of fencing and equestrian, with four Olympic appearances in fencing (1936-56) and one in equestrian events (1964). His 28-year span of Olympic competition is equal to the best ever for Swedish Olympian, with Tore Holm. Ljungquist was a career officer in the Swedish military, and won five Swedish national championships in fencing.

In 1970 he and his wife settled in Potomac, Maryland in the United States, where he became a dressage coach. Ljungquist coached the 1974 USA World Championship dressage squad, the gold-medal-winning 1975 Pan-American Team, the bronze-medal-winning 1976 Olympic Team, and the fourth-place finishers at the 1978 World Championships. Ljungquist died of a heart attack while on holiday in his native Sweden.
