Biography

Vadim Gutzeit was a sabreur fencer who competed at three Olympic Games, winning a team gold with the Unified Team in 1992. At the 1992 World Championships Gutzeit won an individual sabre bronze and a silver in the team competition. He competed at four editions of the Universiade, winning five medals between 1991-99, with golds in the individual sabre event in 1997 and 1999.

After retiring from competition, Gutzeit coached the Ukrainian national team, leading their women to gold in the team sabre at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In 2018 he was named the head of the Department of Youth and Sports in the Kyiv City Administration. In 2019 he had an opportunity to serve in the Ukrainian Parliament but demurred, saying he preferred working in the executive branch. In March 2020 Gutzeit was appointed head of Ukraine’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, a cabinet-level position.
