Biography

Growing up along the Jersey Shore, Steve Mormando fenced with the New York Fencers’ Club. He attended Rutgers University, graduating in 1980. In 1981 he became an assistant coach at New York University (NYU) for both men and women, eventually becoming head coach of the men in 1987 and the women in 1989. Mormando won four medals at the Pan American Games, with silvers in team sabre in 1983, 1987, and 1991, and an individual gold medal in sabre in 1991. He competed at the World Championships four times (1985, 1987, 1989, 1991) and twice at the Universiade (1983, 1985). Mormando has coached for over 30 years at NYU, coaching over 40 All-Americans, and six NCAA Champions. He earned a masters’ degree in sports and fitness management from NYU in 1983, and has been inducted into the Toms River High School, Rutgers University and New Jersey Shore Halls of Fame.
