Like his father before him, heavyweight freestyle wrestler Fred Harman was a tram driver, before later becoming a travelling salesman. A member of two of London´s top wrestling clubs, Hammersmith Amateur Wrestling Club and the German Gymnastic Society, Harman was selected for the 1908 London Olympics but was a non-starter. He served in the Royal Army Service Corps (RASC) during World War I.
