Edinburgh’s Alec Munro was one of Scotland’s top wrestlers in the inter-war era. Originally a member of the Holyrood Club, he later joined the Edinburgh Abbey Athletic Club. He became a Scotland and Great Britain international and in 1923 helped Scotland beat England thanks to a win over the three-time Olympian George MacKenzie.
Munro was selected for the 1924 and 1928 Olympics, but was a reserve both times and never got to compete. Many times a Scottish champion, the highlight of Munro’s career was in capturing the national featherweight title in 1927 by beating Bert Sansum by two falls to one at the Swiss Gymnasium Society, London. Munro turned professional in 1929 and in the 1930s later became a wrestling referee.
