Biography

Frans Karjagin played football and bandy on the international level. Frade is remembered as a tough defender, earning a total of 57 caps between 1929-43, a record number of appearances at the time. In addition to the Olympic tournament, he played three matches for Finland in the qualifying round for the 1938 World Cup. On the club level he competed for Helsingin Palloseura (HPS) and Töölön Vesa until 1928. With IF Kamraterna Helsingfors (HIFK), Karjagin finally won four championships (1930, 1931, 1933, 1937). He was inducted into the Finnish Football Hall of Fame in 2003.

At the same time, he also pursued a bandy career with the same clubs. He won the Finnish Workers’ Sports Federation championship in 1927-28 with Töölön Vesa. After that he moved to HIFK, playing a total of 72 matches in the championship series between 1929-44 and winning six Finnish titles (1934, 1935, 1938, 1939, 1941 and 1944). He represented the Finnish bandy team in 12 internationals. His brothers Leo and Alexander also played for the national football team winning 17 and 8 caps respectively.
