Ulysse Wibaut

Ulysse Wibaut was playing for Olympique Lillois in 1908 and one later article described him as “very far from the international level.” He studied in Lille, graduating as a chemical engineer, and football was considered only a hobby. He later joined the Lille Club in 1912. Wibaut was born in Howardries, a Belgian city on the border, to a father who was a boatman on the Scheldt. Ulysse did some occasional coaching, notably in 1921 with US Quevilly.

Wibaut moved to Rouen and then became the director of the Kuhlmann Chemical plant in Loos. Often seen listed as Ursule Wibaut, that name was derived from original listings as U. Wibaut, but his correct full given name was Ulysse Joseph.
