Biography

Defender Birgitt Austermühl was a member of the German female football squad that was eliminated in the group stage at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. She took part in the European Championships in 1991, 1993, and 1995, winning the trophy in the final year when she was also a World Cup runner-up. She was therefore awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Austermühl won 55 international caps.

Domestically, Austermühl played for VfB Kassel, FSC Lohfelden, FSV Frankfurt, TSV Battenberg, TSV Jahn Calden and, FSV Frankfurt again from 1994. In 1995, she helped Frankfurt win the German national title, and also the German Cup in 1995 and 1996. She later coached women’s teams in Germany.
