Henri Barnoin

Henri Alphonse Barnoin studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and initially created mainly portraits in an academic style. From 1909 he exhibited irregularly at the Salon de Paris. From 1912 he spent a lot of time in Brittany and became an Impressionist. There he mainly painted harbor, street and market scenes. His style could be characterized as “narrative”. He spent some time in Brittany’s commune Le Faouët and approximately 10 of his oil paintings hang in the city’s museum today.

Barnoin later worked as a drawing teacher at the Écoles Municipales in Paris and in 1926 became the official painter of the French navy. He probably painted hundreds of pictures with boats, mostly fishing boats, but also sailing boats. Since most of them are not assigned a date of origin, a clear identification is not possible.
