Biography

Anand Amritraj was an Indian tennis player and businessman. From 1973 to 1984 Amritraj was a successful doubles player, often paired with his brother Vijay. Amritraj achieved career-best world-rankings of 74 in November 1974 as a singles player, and 80 in January 1984 as a doubles player. He is also the father-in-law of American tennis star Alison Riske.

Amritraj’s best success as a doubles player was in reaching the final of the Davis Cup on two occasions (1974, 1987). However, the 1974 final was against South Africa, with the match being forfeited due to the Indian government’s stance on apartheid. At the 1976 Wimbledon Championships Anand and Vijay reached the semi-finals of the doubles tournament.

During his career Amritraj won seven singles titles and 12 doubles titles. He and his brother competed in the doubles tournament at the 1988 Seoul Olympics where they reached the second round.
