Biography

Adhemar Canavessi was a Uruguayan fullback. After starting with Bella Vista, he moved to Peñarol in 1928 and won four national titles (1928-29, 1932, 1935). Canavessi played with the Uruguay national team from 1925 (match against Paraguay) to 1928 (against Chile), earning nine caps and a gold medal at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. Unfortunately he is remembered for an own goal with only five minutes left in the decisive match at the 1927 Copa America, which handed the title to Argentina. According to news of the time, Canavessi voluntarily missed the two finals of the Olympic tournament (1924/1928) because every time he took the field against Argentina his national team had lost.
