Biography

Croatian Željko Perušić started his football (soccer) career in his youth with Duga Resa, but moved to Dinamo Zagreb when he was 20. He then won the Yugoslavian Cup four times and the National Championship in 1958, also helping them to runner-up finishes in 1960 and 1963. He earned 27 international caps with Yugoslavia at the 1960 Europeans and the Roma Olympics. At the Europeans Yugoslavia was beaten only 2-1 by the Soviet Union in extra time in the final. At the Olympics the same year he earned the gold medal with his team beating Denmark 3-1. He also played in 43 matches in different European Cup competitions for the Zagreb XI, Dinamo, and 1860. And played in both final matches when Dinamo lost the 1963 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup final to Valencia CF. Perušić then moved to West Germany in 1965, playing with TSV 1860 München and winning the West German national title in his first season. After 138 games for München, he switched to FC St. Gallen in Switzerland in 1970, where he also became coach of the team, leading them back to National League A in 1971. He later coached youth teams in St. Gallen.
