Biography

Barbara Slater came from a sporting background, her father Bill Slater was an international footballer and played for England in the 1958 World Cup whilst her uncle, John Warr, represented England at cricket. As well as her Olympic appearance she competed in European Championships for Great Britain.

A graduate of Birmingham and Oxford universities Slater worked for the BBC as a television commentator for the Moscow Olympics and later joined the corporation as a producer. She has been involved in the coverage of major sporting events such as The Open Golf Championships, Wimbledon and the London Marathon as well as the Olympic Games. In 2009 she was appointed the BBC’s Head of General Sports and stayed in that post until her retirement in 2023.
