Biography

Christine Schmitt was a member of the East German women’s gymnastics team from 1967-72. During this time she won team silver medals at the 1970 World Championships in Ljubljana and the 1972 Summer Olympics in München. Individually, in the all-round events, she finished ninth at Ljubljana, and 15th at München. At the 1970 Worlds she won the bronze medal on the balance beam. At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, she was a substitute on the East German team. Schmitt later studied sports and became a graduated sports teacher at a school in Leipzig.
