Biography

Kathy Johnson was a US team member from 1978-84, competing at the World Championships in 1978, 1979, 1981, and 1983, as well as the 1984 Olympics. She won the 1977 America’s Cup in addition to silver that year in all-around at the NHK Cup in Japan. She was all-around champion at the 1979 World Cup, and won the US all-around championship in 1978. Johnson attended Centenary College and won the all-around in 1978 at the AIAW meet. She was a member of the 1980 US Olympic team that did not compete and was the oldest team member at the 1984 Olympics, winning a silver medal in the team event and a bronze medal on beam. Johnson later worked as a commentator for televised gymnastics events and also worked for Vidal Sassoon. She married and raised two children, and also devoted herself to helping athletes in her role as a member of the Advisory Committee for Athletes.
