As a member of the Birmingham Dolobran Club, James Cotterell helped them to win the Adams Shield, awarded to the British team champions, in 1906 and 1907. Having appeared at the 1908 London Olympics, he won his third Adams Shield in 1909. Cotterell was then a member of the Birmingham Athletic Institute and, when they won it for a third consecutive year in 1911, he was their captain. Cotterell appeared in his second Olympics in 1920 at the age of 40.

Apart from a brief spell when he was a labourer as youngster, Cotterell spent most of his working life in the Birmingham City Police force.
