Biography

German gymnast Ralf Büchner won the silver medal with the East German team at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Individually, he placed 18th but did not reach an apparatus final. Four years later at Barcelona, now representing re-unified Germany, the team finished an unfortunate fourth. Individually, he placed 33rd and again did not reach an apparatus final.

Büchner’s greatest moment came in 1991 when he was world champion on the horizontal bar, when he also collected the team bronze medal. He also won one silver and three bronze medals at European Championships. Domestically, he won several East German and German titles. By profession, Büchner was trained locksmith.
