Biography

As a youth in Latvia, George Gulack divided his time between gymnastics, where he was national all-around champion in 1921, and pole-vaulting but when he came to America in 1922 he was purely a competitive gymnast. His best event was the rings, on which he won his gold medal and also two national titles – in 1928 and 1935. Gulack became one of the top administrators in gymnastics. In 1948 he helped the AAU design a new set of rules to conform to international standards. He was manager of the US Olympic gymnastic team in 1948, an international judge for nearly 25 years, served as chairman of US Gymnastics and president of the Pan-American Gymnastics Federation and was an honorary vice-president of the International Gymnastic Federation. Gulack was also a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee from 1934 to 1958.
