Biography

Handball player Rüdiger Borchardt competed at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, but the East German team finished a disappointing seventh. He played 153 international matches with the GDR national team and scored 664 goals. He also played with the re-unified German team, and added 15 more international caps and 25 goals, however, he was not selected for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. In 1986, Borchardt won the bronze medal at the World Championships and, in 1990, the East German team finished eighth.

Domestically, Borchardt played with SC Empor Rostock until 1990, and helped them win two national titles, in 1986 and 1987, and five consecutive cup wins 1985-89. After re-unification, he moved to GWD Minden (1990-91), and VfL Bad Schwartau (1991-92), before returning to Rostock (1992-98).
