Biography

East German judoka Dietmar Lorenz participated in two Summer Olympics: 1976 at Montréal and 1980 at Moskva. In 1976, he finished fifth as a half-heavyweight and was eliminated early in the open class. Four years later he won a bronze as a half-heavyweight but won the gold medal in the open class as the only German Olympic champion in judo (through 2016). In 1975, 1977 and 1978 Lorenz won the European Championships as a half-heavyweight, also winning the open class in 1978.

Lorenz reached the 7th Dan and won 11 East German titles. From 1980-89 he was chief coach at his home club of SC Dynamo Hoppegarten. After re-unification he initially was jobless, but since 1992 he was a social worker in Berlin-Neukölln with a sports and youth center.
