Having lost the 1966 ABA flyweight final to the experienced Paddy Maguire, Johnny McGonigle reached the semi-final in 1967 and the following year became champion after beating Maurice Steves in the final. That year McGonigle went to the Mexico Olympics but lost on points in his first-round contest when beaten by the Japanese flyweight Tetsuaki Nakamura.
A gunner in the Army, McGonigle never turned professional and continued to box for the Army after the Olympics. Following defeat by Pat Cowdell in an ABA Championships qualifier in 1971, however, McGonigle announced his retirement from the ring. Three months later, however, he was fighting again and in 1972 won the Combined Services flyweight tile. He added the bantamweight title in 1978.
