Magdeburg-based East German featherweight boxer Werner Kirsch withdrew in the second round at the 1960 Roma Olympics, after falling ill with jaundice. Kirsch was East German lightweight champion from 1963-66. He later became a longtime coach at professional boxing gym SES Magdeburg. In 2017, Kirsch died in a nursing home after a long illness.
