Johan Nyholm was born near Tampere as the son of a farmer. The family moved to Helsinki, when Johan was just one year old. With the coxed four crew from Helsinki, Nyholm lost to the eventual bronze medalists from Denmark in the quarter-finals of the 1912 Olympic Games. In the following year he was in the boat winning the Nordic championship. With his wife Lydia Alexandra (née Eklöf) he had one daughter.
