Biography

Tom Christie attended King’s College, London, and in 1950 qualified as a doctor, specializing as an anaesthetist. He worked at the Westminster and St. Thomas’s hospitals, and in the 1950s served as a surgeon lieutenant in the Royal Navy

A fine rower, Christie was a member of the King’s College Boat Club coxless fours that won the first post-war Wyfold Cup at Henley, in 1946. It was the first of five Henley successes for Christie. He was in the Thames Rowing Club eight that won the Grand Challenge Cup in 1948, and that same year won the Stewards’ Cup. Christie also won the Silver Goblets twice, with Tony Butcher in 1949 and Chris Bywater in 1952. Christie and Nicholas Clack were second in both the Silver Goblets and British Empire and Commonwealth Games coxless pairs in 1954.
