Biography

Lewis Luxton succeeded to the IOC in 1956 upon the death of his father, a long-time IOC Member. The younger attended Cambridge University where he stroked the winning eight in The Boat Race, and represented Great Britain in rowing at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. He also swam at Cambridge and represented Britain in swimming at the 1930 World Student Games. Luxton became president of Shell Oil Company in Australia and enjoyed a successful business career. He also served as Deputy Chairman of the 1956 Olympic Organizing Committee. Luxton was an IOC Member from 1956-74, and was then made an Honorary Member. He attended 14 of 29 possible IOC Sessions during his term, a difficult trip for him in that era because of the travel to and from Europe and Australia.
