Biography

At Los Angeles in 1932 Ernst “Mampe” Gaber won a silver medal in the coxless fours and was eliminated in the repêchage of the eights. Four years earlier he was fifth with the eights in Amsterdam. In 1936 at Berlin, Gaber finally won gold in the coxed fours, winning the 1936 European Championship with the same crew. He was German Champion from 1928-31 in the eights; 1929-31, 1933, and 1935 in the coxless fours; and in 1935 and 1936 in the coxed fours with the Mannheim rowing club Amicitia 1876. Gaber took part in World War II as an SS lieutenant.
