Biography

West German rower Andreas Schmelz partnered Georg Agrikola in the double sculls at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. They finished and unfortunate fourth in the final, although they were seen as one of the favorites as they had won the bronze medal at the 1983 World Championships.

In 1983 Schmelz won the national single sculls title, and in 1984, the double sculls with Agrikola, also national titles. From 1985, Schmelz rowed with Ralf Thienel and the pair won the national title in 1987, as well as the silver medal at the Worlds. Schmelz later became a graduated surgeon with his own practice, and was also team doctor of the German Rowing Association.
