When Ghasem Yavarkandi was 16-years-old he joined his local boxing club before training with the Iranian national team a year later. After competing at an international level for a few years Yavarkandi was selected to participate at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo where he won silver in the light-middleweight class. Two years later he represented Iran at the 1960 Roma Olympics, this time as a welterweight. After winning his opening bout against Alfredo Cornejo (CHI), he then lost to Lech Drogosz (POL) to be eliminated from the tournament.
