Biography

Silvano Bertini was an Italian boxer with a high-level amateur career. In 1962 he was Italian Champion and world military (CISM) champion in the welterweight division. A year later he repeated as CISM Champion and won gold at the Mediterranean Games and silver at the Moskva European Championships. In 1964 Bertini was Italian Champion and added a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

Bertini then turned professional, débuting on 31 January 1965 by defeating Arthur Zemla on points. After 20 victories, he became Italian champion at Roma on 9 February 1968, defeating Domenico Tiberia by decision and defended his title on 14 August in Lignano Sabbiadoro, again against Tiberia. On 18 January 1969 at Bologna, Bertini won the European welterweight title by knocking out Edwin Mack in round 13. He only held the European belt for a short time, losing it on 5 May in Paris, against the Frenchman Jean Josselin by TKO in the eighth round.

In his last two active years, on 30 July 1972 Bertini won the Italian middleweight title at Viterbo by defeating Alberto Torri by decision. Then on 14 August 1973 he fought at the Makomanai Ice Arena in Sapporo for the WBC and WBA super-welterweight titles against the Japanese Koichi Wajima, but lost by TKO in round 12. It was his last match. Bertini retired with a career record of 42 wins (18 by KO), 3 losses (all by KO), and 1 draw.
