Biography

José Álvarez was born in Cuba and attended Harvard Business School prior to setting up a number of businesses in his home country. The political situation in Cuba eventually led him to move to the United States’ Virgin Islands, where he owned an insurance company that became the country’s largest in the 1970s.

Having taken up sport shooting in Cuba, he also transferred his talents in this realm to the United States’ Virgin Islands and represented them in pistol shooting at the 1971 Pan American Games and the 1972 Munich Olympics. At the latter tournament, he was 57th in the free pistol, 50 metres event. In his later years, he settled in Miami, Florida.
