Biography

Aleksandr Mastyanin began competing in sports rifle shooting competitions at a young age before joining the Army in 1971 where he eventually reached the rank of lieutenant colonel. Mastyanin specialised in the small-calibre 50 metres event, becoming the USSR champion in 1977 and the European champion in 1983. In 1980 he competed in the small-bore rifle prone event at the Moskva Olympics, finishing sixth, only one point off winning a medal. Following his competitive career he worked as a coach and teacher, and was honoured with multiple awards and diplomas. Mastyanin’s daughter Anna was also a noted sports pistol shooter who competed at the 2012 London Olympics.
