Biography

István Angyal won a series of competitions in the colors of Tatabánya SC in his youth including eight district youth championship titles in one day from 100 metres to 1,500 metres. His path took him directly to the national team, where he competed five times between 1934 and 1936. In 1934, he finished sixth in the European championship in the 400 metres freestyle, and in 1935 he was the starting man for the 4x200 metres relay that set the European record. In 1936, he participated in the Berlin Olympics, where he competed in the 400m and 1500m, and was a reserve in the 4x200m relay. During his sports career he also played in the local water polo team for decades.

In the meantime, he worked three shifts in the mine, where he continued to train, and the former scullery boy became a carpenter, then a miner, and later a mining engineer. When he attended the mining school in Pécs, he played football in the local team. After finishing his sports career, he was one of the organizers and for many years the leader of swimming sports in Tatabánya.
