Biography

Lies Bonnier took up swimming at a young age, but World War II delayed the start of her career until 1948, the year in which she first appeared in the Dutch national championships. She made her international début at the 1950 European Championships, where she won silver in the 200 metres breaststroke behind Raymonda Vergauwen of Belgium, but ahead of her compatriot Jannie de Groot. Bonnier’s next stop was the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where she was eliminated in the semifinals of the same event. Later that year she captured her first and only national title, in the 200 metres breaststroke, and retired from competition, although she later was active in masters level swimming competitions.
