Biography

Jean Stewart was third in the 100 metres backstroke at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki. Two years earlier, she had been second in the 110 yards backstroke at the Empire Games in Auckland and at the following Games in Vancouver in 1954, she was the bronze medalist in the same event. She won the national 110 yards backstroke title from 1950-54 and again in 1956, the 220 yards from 1950-54 and the 110 yards butterfly in 1953. Jean Stewart married Lincoln Hurring, a backstroker in Helsinki and Melbourne, and their son Gary was fourth in the 100 metres backstroke in Los Angeles in 1984.
