A London taxi driver and very experienced boxing referee, Ernie Tillinghast was one of three British referees at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics along with Dick Gittins and Tom McCosh. A former boxer with the St. Pancras Boxing Club in the 1920s, Tillinghast was both honorary secretary and treasurer of the cub in the 1950s and was also secretary of the North-West London division of the London ABA.
Having refereed at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, Tillinghast refereed 10 bouts at the Tokyo Olympics and was one of the judges in the lightweight final. In a light-middleweight semi-final bout at the 1960 London ABA Championships between Mike Tuck and Brian Langman, Tillinghast was involved in a rare contest that saw both boxers disqualified. The two men had been warned twice for “holding” and, disregarding the warnings, were both disqualified in the second round.
