Walter Kunz began his swimming career in Zürich in the late 1940s where he quickly found success, winning multiple Swiss titles in the 100m and 200m breaststroke. Selected as a member of the Swiss Olympic swimming delegation in 1948, he competed in the latter event in London, but did not advance past his heat, finishing in fourth place and 10 seconds behind a chance to compete in the semifinal.
Following the Olympics, Kunz moved to Locarno in 1950 where he worked in the management at the local pool, Lido Locarno, also teaching swimming lessons. There, he continued to swim competitively as a member of Nuoto Sport Locarno, setting the Swiss record for butterfly on multiple occasions, and winning the national title in 1953. He also won the 100 metres breaststroke title in 1951 at the Swiss Championships held in Sankt Gallen. Kunz lived in Locarno until summer 1954, when he moved once again for professional reasons, this time up north to Kreuzlingen. As a member of SC Kreuzlingen, he won the Swiss butterfly title once again in 1955.
