Ellen Owen attended college at the University of Alabama, where she won the 1985 Southeastern Conference title on springboard. Owen retired from the sport after college, but after not competing for five years, she returned to win the 1991 US title on platform, and compete at the 1991 World Championships. She was also platform bronze medalist that year at the US Indoor Championships. Owen’s sister, Amy McGrath, made the ill-fated 1980 US Olympic team, also as a platform diver.
