Biography

Sue Pitt (Anderson) competed at the 1964 Olympics in the medley relay, and made the 1968 Olympic team as an alternate but did not get to compete. Sue was elected team co-captain with Claudia Kolb in 1968. She won three AAU titles, the 100 fly outdoors in 1965-66 and the 200 yard fly indoors in 1965, setting an American record. In July 1963 Pitt set a world record for the 200 meter butterfly, recording 2:29.1. She set a world record in the 220 yard fly in August 1965 in Cardiff, Wales.

Pitt graduated from Highland Park (NJ) High School, attended the University of Vermont, and graduated from Rutgers University. She represented Summit YMCA and Scarlet Jets. After retiring from competition, Pitt spent two years coaching swimming in Tunisia as a Peace Corps volunteer. She then coached for 28 years in New Jersey, founding the Scarlet Aquatic Club in 1991, and serving as head coach of that club for the next decade. Pitt became Director of Programs and Services at USA Swimming, where she worked from 2000-2014.
