Biography

Although born in Michigan, Marley Shriver moved with her family to California in her youth. She studied at Southern Cal, graduating in 1958. In 1955 she placed second in the AAU meet in the 400 freestyle, but improved that in 1956, winning in an American record time of 5:13.8. She also placed third in 1956 in the 100, 800, and 1,500 freestyle events. Shriver placed second in the 400 free at the 1956 US Olympic Trials. After the Olympics she spent a brief time coaching but then married diver Gary Tobian and raised a family, although they later divorced. Shriver-Tobian became a dental hygienist and settled in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, where she also volunteered as a host at Sunlight Mountain Resort.
