Biography

László Gálos started playing volleyball at the age of 17 in the Southern Hungarian town of Baja. He studied and played sport at the Hungarian University of Physical Education from 1953-57 and then for the next seven years at the Újpest club. Between 1956-64 he played 132 times for the Hungarian national team, where he was a team captain for a while. With the national team, Gálos participated in one Olympics (1964, Tokyo), two World (1960, 1962) and two European Championships (1958, 1963). At both the 1960 World Cup in Brazil and the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, his team finished in sixth position. In 1963 they won a silver medal at the European Championships in Romania.

As a player of Újpest he was a six-time Hungarian champion consecutively between 1958-63, a two-time Hungarian Cup winner (1962, 1964) and a bronze medallist in the European Cup of Champions in 1962. After the Olympics, he finished his active sports career and continued as the coach of the women’s team of Újpest. In his first year of coaching in 1965 they won the championship title. He was the vice-president of Újpest for two decades from 1965 onwards.
