When he was 14-years-old Gérard Faetibolt won the 100 metres breaststroke title at the Alsace championships in France. Faetibolt’s talent was noticed by Marco Diener, who convinced him to focus on water polo instead. Faetibolt soon became a mainstay in the French national team where he played as the goalkeeper in the squad. In 1955 he won silver in the water polo tournament at the Mediterranean Games in Barcelona. After missing out on the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, due to the cost of sending a team to Australia, Faetibolt was selected as part of the squad that competed at the 1960 Roma Games. He competed in only one match at the Olympics, playing in goal in their 10–4 loss to the United States. During his career he earned 45 caps with the national team and won the French championship title with SR Colmar in 1959, 1961, and 1963.
