Biography

Hans-Jürgen Schüler played water polo and was named to the East German national team, which finished second at the 1966 European Championships and sixth at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. The team was coached by Rolf Bastel. Nationally Schüler played with SG Dynamo Magdeburg, at that time the top club in the GDR. In the GDR Schüler was honored as a Master of Sports.

In 1968 the DTSB (East German Gymnastics and Sports Association) ended national support for water polo, field hockey, basketball, and some other sports. International competitions in the capitalist world were forbidden, training sessions were cancelled, and water polo was no longer allowed in Magdeburg.
