Biography

Heavyweight lifter Stefan Grützner won the bronze medal at the 1972 München Summer Olympics, just ahead his greatest rival, and teammate, Helmut Losch. Grützner also added a silver and a bronze medal at the 1971 and 1972 World Championships, respectively. In 1972, he also won a bronze medal at the Europeans. Domestically, he won the East German national title three times, in 1968, 1970-71.

Grützner later became a lifting coach at his home club SC Karl-Marx-Stadt (after re-unification, Chemnitzer AC) until his retirement in 2013. He was also employed by the Regional Olympic Center at Chemnitz.
