Biography

Originally a competitor in the sport of hurling, Harry Boland took up the sport of basketball while a student at University College, Dublin. He was one of only two members of the Irish basketball team at the 1948 Games to be picked from outside the military. Boland was one of Ireland’s top players in the 1940s and 50s and, after his playing days were over, served as President of Basketball Ireland. He was an accountant by profession and, in 1950, set up the firm of Haughey Boland in partnership with Charles Haughey who would later serve three terms as Taoiseach (prime minister) of Ireland.
