Biography

In a 20-year basketball career, Sauro Bufalini played for Libertas Livorno (1958-61), Pallacanestro Varese (1961-68), Partenope Napoli (1968-71), Reyer Venezia (1971-72), and finally Pallacanestro Livorno (1975-77). He won the Italian title with Varese in 1964, and two European Cup Winners’ Cups with Varese (1967) and Napoli (1970).

Bufalini made his official international début against the Asociaciòn de Bàsquetbol Valparaiso (Chile) in 1960, and went on to win 111 caps and score 559 points. He competed at three European Championships (1963, 1965 and 1967) with a best finish of fourth. He appeared at two Olympics, 1964 and 1968. At the Tokyo Olympics Italy suffered a shock defeat by the hosts, in a match played at nine o’clock in the morning.
