German wrestler Jean Hauptmanns of Düsseldorf finished second at the 1911 Unofficial World Championships as a heavyweight. At the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, he was eliminated in the second round against Finnish wrestler Kalle Viljamaa. Around 1910, Hauptmanns was also one of the best German shot putters.
In the 1930s, the restaurant „Zoologischer Garten” in Düsseldorf was run by Hauptmanns, where the Nazi party frequently held meetings. A member of the party, he was involved in the “Aryanization” of a Jewish company in 1938.
